Located in the northern Berkshires, the Haflinger Haus, which opened in 2012, has a huge variety on their menu. The staff is friendly and efficient and the food, which contains items from Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe in addition to traditional American fare is excellent.
The menu is a bit eclectic, which makes it easy for groups or those with picky tastes. There is a dining room menu which ranges from incredible Hungarian-style Goulash, Wiener Schnitzel and Käsespätzle (a Germanic version of mac and cheese that is sure to please) to more typical grilled NY strip steak, grilled schrod and pasta bolognaise. There are also lighter fares listed in the tavern menu, including flatbread, a chicken schnitzel sandwich and crispy fried fish fillets.
The dining room is quite sedate and relaxing, with a casual atmosphere. The tavern can be a bit more boisterous with flat screen TVs, high top tables and standard tavern atmosphere. In the summer there is also an outdoor beer garden to enjoy the warm weather and views of the Berkshire hills.
The Haflinger Haus also offers an Inn with uniquely styled guest rooms on the second floor of the building. Rates are extremely reasonable (around $95 depending on the season). You do need to call or email to check availability. The location of the inn is very convenient, located in downtown Adams at the foot of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts.
