Semana Santa, a festival celebrated around the world, is a great way to see a city in another light, with festivals, processions and celebrations throughout the towns.
Head south to Guatemala for a fantastic festival with a very local feel to it. The streets of this old, picturesque city and covered with variously colored sawdust in elaborate designs, creating an incredible visual experience as you walk through the town. Antigua is also quite cheap when traveling from the US or Europe due to conversion rates.
One the biggest spots for celebrating Semana Santa in Europe is Seville, Spain. The city itself is incredible, with it’s dramatic cathedral in the center of the city. Seville is a city that enjoys partying with a festive nightlife year round, but during Semana Santa there is just a unique vibe to this small city. Renting an apartment can be a great way to have extra space, even in the smaller old town area, while saving some cash.
Semana Santa is celebrated across Mexico, but some of the best spots to visit during this time period, with bigger celrbations are Pátzcuaro, Taxco, Oaxaca and San Cristobal de las Casas. Be prepared to encounter fairly large crowds as this is also a vacation period for Mexicans.
