Scuba Diving in Hopkins, Belize

One of the primary reasons for heading to Belize is the world famous scuba diving. With the world’s second biggest barrier reef, Belize draws divers from all over the world.

Well, all of those people are right. The diving in Belize is incredible. Going beyond the crystal clear, warm water, the reef is expansive and the sea life that you’re able to swim with is second to none.

Belize Underwater

In Hopkins, we chose to dive with Belize Underwater. We did two different dives, with different guides each time and both went very well.

The guides were friendly and knowledgable. They were also very accommodating of divers with all skills levels. WE were also impressed with the quality of the food, boat and the equipment. All divers had their own dive computers attached which is a great change of pace from many other dive centers.

While the diving, guides and equipment were great, we weren’t necessarily a huge fan of the services at the front desk. The woman we deal with wasn’t overly friendly and she actually double charged us – an extra $400. We did go back to the shop and inquire about the double charge which she did refund but wasn’t apologetic about it in any way.

Dive sites

South water Caye: an easy but entertaining drift dive. This is about a 30 minute boat ride from shore (longer if you have to pick up others from other locations). We dove the Trick Ridge and Curlew Bank dive sites which offered a great variety of sea life, including lobsters, eels and many types of fish. Belize Underwater charges $150 for this dive.

Glover’s Atoll: is a site that is about an 1.5 hour boat ride from Hopkins. Because it is not a quick and easy dive site to reach it is one of the lesser dove areas, resulting in some very well preserved coral reef structures. We dove the Abyss, Long Key Wall and Bev’s Garden. Belize Underwater charges $250 for this dive.

Bev’s Garden offers a dive that includes Lettuce Leaf coral and vertical barrel sponges that you could fit into. The area is also home to many spiny lobsters and we saw some huge barracuda that can be a bit daunting when they’re smiling at you with those huge teeth. Long Caye Wall was named one of the top three dive sites in the world by Jacques Cousteau.

Before you are ready for these dives be sure to have your Open Water or Advanced Open Water PADI certification.
