Delta offers multiple ways for you to increase your balance of SkyMiles in order to bank your miles and get as many free flights as possible. However, with so many options of cheap flights available due to competition this may not be a great deal.
Award Builder – Increase your miles per flight
Delta does offer the option to purchase ‘extra’ miles per roundtrip flight. These come at a rate cheaper than buying miles outright, at a price of $0.028 per mile. You can purchase packages of one to three Incremental Bonuses in amounts of 1,000 to 3,000 miles. This means you can purchase up to three vouchers that each add 1,000 miles to the miles you will already accrue for your roundtrip flight. This can be a good way to increase your miles quickly if you take very short flights on Delta often. On a per mile basis, this would cost you $350 for Delta’s lowest award ticket at 12,500 miles.

Available only until December 31, 2011 Delta is offering a 50% Bonus on Award Builder miles so you receive an extra 50% per Award Builder trip.
You can outright purchase miles in amounts of anywhere from 2,000 to 60,000 in increments of 2,000 for a rate of 0.035 per mile. Purchasing miles at this rate would mean that the absolute cheapest award flight, at 12,500 miles, would cost $437.50. For most routes within the US you are likely to be able to get a flight for cheaper than this. However, if you are only missing a few miles in order to reach your target this can be a good option.
