If you were to ask where to stay in Toronto I would not hesitate to recommend the Fairmont Royal York. The location is great. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The hotel is home to multiple shops and restaurants. It checks pretty much all of the boxes that I look for when choosing a hotel to stay at.
Hotel rooms at the Fairmont
The rooms are quite nice and large with plenty of space for a person traveling on their own. The decor was updated and everything was extremely clean so there’s not much to complain about. Due to construction surrounding the hotel (May 2013) I was concerned about noise but it didn’t bother me in the least (though I was there over the weekend).
All rooms have the basics that you expect at a decent hotel. While they also list ‘windows that open to the outside’ I can’t really consider a window that opens 4 inches to be ‘open to the outside’. I also have to admit that the air conditioning in my room was sub-par and I cannot stand ‘automated’ mini bars. The coffee maker was decent and the bathroom was well stocked with shampoos, soaps and mouthwash (which is a nice touch). I am also not a fan of hotels where they charge fees for internet access, with the Fairmont asking for somewhere around $14 for WiFi access.

The Fairmont Royal York hosts five different restaurants with varying atmospheres and cuisines. Most of the restaurants are quite pricey but if you feel like dining in comfort you’ve got plenty of options.
EPIC Restaurant and Lounge: is located just on the edge of the hotel lobby and offers are a variety of options from local growers in a contemporary design.
Benihana Japanese Steakhouse : great for groups, this Asian restaurant offers sushi options and and traditional Japanese teppan cooking right at your table.
York’s Deli: is a coffee shop type of cafe for quick snacks and coffee for eat in or take out.
Piper’s Gastropub: is the most informal of the restaurants located in the Avenue floor below the lobby for casual dining.
Library Bar: is located on the main level of the hotel with a unique atmosphere that is ideal for the casual drink or to catch up with friends.
Beyond the decor and cleanliness of the hotel, the location is certainly the most attractive quality of the hotel. Located directly downtown, it is easy and quick to walk to bars, restaurants and public transportation. There is also a free shuttle bus from the hotel to Billy Bishop airport, which makes it extremely easy and convenient to get to and from your hotel for free.
