There are multiple options for getting to Hvar Island, depending on which city you are leaving from. There are regular ferries, catamarans ( faster than the ferry ) and ferries that can transport your car to the island. Ferry schedules can vary depending on the season – they run more often in the summer months than the rest of the year.
A catamaran from Split to Hvar town is only 22 Kuna ( about $5 ) and takes only 50 minutes. Unfortunately, these run only in the afternoon ( again, depending on the season ) with catamarans running at 2, 3 and 4pm. Going in the opposite direction, from Hvar Town to Split, they leave only early in the morning at 6 and 7am. The catamaran can also take you on to Korcula, though this direction of travel is only available in the afternoon. If you are taking a ferry or catamaran to Hvar Town you cannot bring a car, as these are passenger boats only.
If you desire to take a car with you to the island you will need to go to Stari Grad, leaving from Split or Drvenik.
Most of these ferries or catamarans are not possible to book online. When you arrive in the town you plan to depart from be sure to stop at the ferry terminal to ask about times and rates as they are subject to change. In the high season you should also try to purchase your tickets in advance as they can sell out when the tourist season is in full swing.
