Rock of Ages in London

This show is certainly getting some press due to the upcoming release of the movie, starring Tom Cruise. However, having seen the show live in London last year at the Shaftsbury Theatre and having really enjoyed it I am on the fence about seeing the movie. Tom Cruise Singing 80’s rock?

The show is perfect for anyone in their 20’s, 30’s or 40’s who can really appreciate the ridiculousness of the 80’s and has a soft spot in their heart for big hair, loud, obnoxious music and just overall ass-hattery. These hits definitely make you want to want sing along (you know you already sing along to them when you’re by yourself in your car and it’s ten times worse when you’re in a theatre with hundreds of people who also want to sing along).

The venue is great because is small, but not tiny. I think it would be difficult to get a ‘bad’ seat in the theatre so if you can get tickets on the balcony (where I sat) I think you’ll be pleased with them. Most of the action takes place in center stage so you’re unlikely to miss much if you end up to the side of the seating area.

Shayne Ward is the big name of the show because of his reality-tv origins and he does a very commendable job of carrying of his character and being able to handle some big songs. Because of his performance I am concerned I am going to be rather unpleased with Cruise’s try at the same character. I was also shocked here and there by some of the great voices coming from members of the ensemble – incredible.
