Wellfleet is a town close to the end of Cape Cod, just 20 minute from Province Town. While not the best known town on the Cape, it’s certainly my favorite. Wellfleet is very well known for a famous traits including the Beachcomber Bar, sandy beaches, a drive in movie theater and some of the world’s best oysters.
Finding accommodation in Wellfleet
While there are some hotels in Wellfleet, you’re missing out on some of the charm of being on Cape Cod if you stay at one of these hotels or motels. Depending on the time of year, the length of your stay and how many people are with you, the best way to enjoy Wellfleet is to rent a cottage or small house as close to the beach as you possibly can. This also lets you pick up lobsters and oysters at the local markets to cook at home. Try Homeaway to check for properties that are available. If you have only a couple people on your trip or are going only for a couple nights check out some of the bed and breakfast options, particularly in ‘downtown’ or by the marina.
Getting to Wellfleet
From Boston the drive is about two hours to get to Wellfleet. Be sure to try to leave early or late if you are traveling on the weekend as you need to go over the Sagamore or Bourne bridge to get onto Cape Cod and these, as well as the tiny Route 6 highway, get extremely backed up during the summer. Since most cottage and house rentals are Saturday to Saturday traffic is at it’s worst late morning to mid-afternoon on Saturdays so avoid traveling during that time if you can.
Where to eat in Wellfleet
You’re on Cape Cod and should be stuffing your face with as much fresh seafood as you possibly can. Depending on what you’re in the mood for, here are some suggestions.
Oysters at Happy Hour: Pearl, located right near the marina, has a great daily happy hour (2012 summer has oysters at $1.50 each).
Dinner: Mac’s Shack at 91 Commercial Street has a great menu that contains items beyond just seafood and is sure to please just about everyone.
New England Clam Chowder: The Bookstore, on Mayo Beach just past the marina, the Bookstore is well known for it’s incredible clam chowder and is worth the trip just to try it.
Breakfast: The Wicked Oyster has the best breakfast in Wellfleet and also does take out for some incredible breakfast snadwiches
Appetizers: Duck Creeke Tavern, on Main Street serves some upscale dishes and has a price to match but the quality is outstanding. This is the place to get your Oysters Rockefeller.
Beaches in Wellfleet
Go to the beach! There are multiple beaches in Wellfleet; be prepared to pay quite a bit for parking. You may also want to go on the early side if you are dead set on one beach as some of the parking lots do get to capacity on the nicest days, particularly on the weekend. The BeachComber Bar has a beach just behind (be warned you need to climb down a rather large and steep dune to get to it). The benefit is that you can always head into the bar for snacks, lunch or an afternoon cocktail.
Activities in Wellfleet
For a non-beach afternoon you hit up the driving range or mini golf on a sunny day in Wellfleet. In the evening the drive in movie theater is still quite a an attraction for everyone in the area. Depending on the day there are farmers’ markets and a flea market held at the drive in where you can pick up some random items at incredibly cheap prices.
Get out on the water
In the marina you can rent small boats and fishing poles to head out on the water on your own to explore the bay. Because of the protective bay the waves are almost non-existent most days so it can be a very relaxing afternoon. You can also charter boats from the marina to take a half day or full day trip out onto the water for deep sea fishing. Most of the captains are extremely helpful and really do most of the work; you just have to reel in the fish and prepare for your afternoon barbecue!
Neighboring towns and day trips
In the next town over you can head to Truro Vineyards for a wine tasting — be sure to try their Cranberry Wine which is rather incredible and unique.
A great option for getting off the beach is checking out the bike paths that are scattered throughout the area for some exercise on a day that’s not too hot. If you’re looking for some action beyond the slow, relaxed pace of Wellfleet hop in the car and make the 20 minute trek north to Provincetown to take in the shops, restaurants and unique character.
